Dental care of people younger than 19 years old in the province of Las Tunas, three-year results

Abstract

Background: the oral health is a component of the general health and it is vital for an adequate growth and development of children and adolescents. It is a priority within the current national program of dental care.

Objective: to characterize the dental care of people younger than 19 during 3 years in the province of Las Tunas, from January 2015 to December 2017.

Methods: a retrospective descriptive study was carried out with a universe made up of all the patients of the province of Las Tunas, during the period herein declared. The sample included the patients younger than 19 years of age. The data were taken from records of statistical information of the Provincial Health Department. The indicators were analyzed on the basis of the national program of dental care.

Results: the covering range of dental care to patients younger than 19 years of age was more than 89% during the 3 years of the study; the examined patients were more than 92 %; complete curative attention was better in 2016 (86,4 %). The application of fluoridated varnish reached three quarters of the sample in 2016 and 2017 in rural schools; it was lower in the rest. Fluoridated mouth rinse was only insufficient in adolescents of 15 to 18 years of age. The municipality of Amancio presented the best results.

Conclusions: the study characterized the dental care of people younger than 19 years of age during 3 years in the province of Las Tunas, showing encouraging advances regarding the indicators of the country.
