Background: dentists are those health professionals most at risk to catch and transmit COVID-19, which is why their knowledge of this disease is essential to prevent and control it.
Objective: to describe the level of knowledge of prevention and control of COVID-19 by dentists of the municipality of Las Tunas, province of Las Tunas, in April 2020.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the place and during the period declared in the objective. The study universe was made up of 134 dentists and the sample included 60 dentists selected by probabilistic randomly sampling. The following variables were assessed: sex, presence of non-communicable chronic diseases and work data. An exam on COVID-19 was given, as well as protection measures and actions on patients’ care. The contents with the greatest difficulties were analyzed.
Results: there was a prevalence of the female sex, the 20 to 34 age group and hypertension as the non-communicable chronic disease. Most of the dentists worked in an urban district and half of them were working in the door-to-screening in the community. The question related to the use or not of chlorhexidine in the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 was the topic with the greatest difficulty. 68,2 % obtained quality results, with a marking over 80 points.
Conclusions: the dentist showed command of the general knowledge of COVID-19. The proved deficiencies were centered on the biosecurity measures, procedures and precautions all along the process of patients’ care.
